Liestal - line of Chienbäse

The parading of Chienbäse (torches) through the Old Town of Liestal happens every year in Feburary - the night before Morgenstreich in Basel city itself. Being dark and, usually, cold the Chienbäse provide a fine atmosphere to the town and provide a dose of warmth with each passing. Apparently the roots of this tradition lie in a pagan tradition of burning away of the winter months.
