Solothurn is known as Switzerland's finest Baroque city on account of the Baroque style town planning and the Cathedral which dominates the towns skyline.
During the Reformation in Switzerland, Solothurn remained Catholic and, as a result, the French ambassadors were stationed in Solothurn They brought the Baroque style and money with them and promptly financed the rebuilding of the town in the new, modern style of the time.
