Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta is the parish church of San Gimignano and was consecrated in 1148 by Pope Eugenio III. Today only the travertine columns from the original structure remain as the whole structure was raised, vaulted and redecorated in the Gothic period. The interior contains three aisles and the capitals were produced by local sculptors. The windows were bricked up in order to allow the whole interior to be frescoed.
