New Zealand and Australia plan
13 January 2008
We did some investigation into our trip to New Zealand and returning via Japan. However, the fights proved to be unduly expensive. Consequently, we're going to come back from Australia instead.
Most likely we will visit Brisbane or Sydney - each has it's benefits. Neither of us have been to Brisbane previously and I've only been to Syndey once before - in 2002 while en route to Ceduna for the Eclipse in the Outback.
We know some people in Brisbane from our previous eclipse travels and it'll be nice if we can catch up with them. If we come back from Sydney, we may well be able to fly on the new Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 which, to date, I have only seen at Singapore Airport itself. To date, only Singapore Airlines are flying the A380 and it's only doing the Singapore/Sydney route.

We received advise today that we should restrict our visit to either the Kyoto or Tokyo areas so as not to be too rushed. If we spend the time in Tokyo, we should take a day trip to Nikko or Mt Fuji. Kyoto has been recommended for it's temples and historic architecture. From Kyoto we should take a trip to the Hiroshima area. Near to Hiroshima is the Miyajima which, apparently, has very scenic torii and temples. We were also pointed to this travelogue.

We received advise that we shouldn't try to do both Tokyo and Kyoto as that would be too much crammed into one week. The advise offered suggest that if we are interested in modern Japan stay in Tokyo for the week and take a day trip to Kamakura. However, if we are more interested in traditional Japan stay in Kyoto and take day trips to Himeji, Nara and Osaka.
28th December 2007
We have recently also received information that we should also visit Naoshima Island and Miyajima.
In Kyoto, it has been recomended that we stay at K's House
Plan date: 07 December 2007
In June 2008, we will be visiting New Zealand for a family event. It is our current intention to fly directly to New Zealand and return via Japan.
Our visit to New Zealand will be based in the Taranaki region of North Island.
We've never visited Japan before so we're in really new territory with Japan. We're most likely to fly from Auckland to Tokyo - which will be either with Air New Zealand or ANA, the flag carriers of New Zealand and Japan respectivly.
We would like to spend several days in Tokyo and explore the city. One of the marvels of transport that I would very much like to use is the Shinkansen (aka the bullet train) - so it's likely that we'll visit the Kyoto or Osaka as well.
