The horrors of the British Government

Date: 11 December 2006

The British Government has, once again, decided to raise taxes. This time by doubling the tax on airport usage. The government attempted to cover itself by promoting its Green Credentials.

If this tax were truly a green tax, the ca$h-grabbers that run The Treasury (namely one Mr Gordon Brown) would have taken other measures. The could have slapped a tax on petrol. Again. And invested more heavily in a functioning public transport system (which isn't the British one!) Yet time after time, Mr Brown has failed to provide investment (subsidy yes, investment no) in the ailing transportation system. With the majority of pollution in Britain coming from road-vehicles, provision of an economically viable alternative to road transport is the only way in which Mr Brown can claim and demonstrate his Green Credentials.

Furthermore, this is not a tax-neutral policy. It simply raises taxes on airlines and, by implication, those who use them. If Mr Brown and his cronies wished to demonstrate any Green credentials at all they should raise taxes on the greatest offenders and provide incentives to those who attempt to or provide the means to reduce emissions. Mr Brown has failed to do either.

Mr Brown did not even care to discriminate between those airlines who use more fuel-effiecient planes and those who do not. Surely, one should incentivize gas-guzzling airlines to switch to more Green-ways? Or did I simply misunderstand him? I'm sure he thinks the electorate is comprise primarily of morons. Given my now prolonged absence from the country this may be truer than modesty permits me to state.

Naturally, these costs will be passed onto the consumer. Once again, Average Joe must pay for the Brownites mal-judgment.

Once again this Government has shown itself to be what it is. High tax. High subsidy. Low investment. Shame on them.

And the morons that vote for these liars.
