Whataroa Pub

14th November 2007

We popped into the Whataroa Pub (which seems to be the focal point of the town) this evening for a spot of dinner. We took the stone grill.

M'learned colleague took the Stone Grill with Venison. I took the mixed grill which came with beef, pork and chicken. As side-servings we took chips and veggies.

Ok, so the service wasn't what it is at The Ritz of London. Ok, so there were a couple of couple of kids enjoying themselves. So, the carpets were in need of a bit of a clean. So the deep fried food that they served us yesterday was sh1te. And they confused who ordered the fries and who wanted veggies. But all is forgiven.

In this shocking exception to my no-tolerance approach to poor service, I have granted Whataroa Pub an exhalated status as having provided one of the best meals I've had this year. The meat was just fantastic. Tender. Moist. Flavoursome. Farmed locally. All pieces of meat were sizeable - and the Venison was almost on the too big side of large. But the beef and the venison were excellent cuts of meat which left you wanting more. The side-dishes were just that. Side-shows in a wonderful painting of juicy and voluptuous tenderness. Somehow, everything else faded into the background and the local meat became the focal point of attention.

Stone-grill at Whataroa pub is to be highly recommended.
