Oamaru
The early discovery of limestone, an excellent building material,
helped to contribute to the Oamarus excellent appearance. Limestone
is easy to carve and mould which enabled many of the of the
architects and masons to produce works in fashionable styles
of architecture. This, combined with the wealth of the 19th
Century, have resulted in the one
of the finest 19th century streets in New Zealand.
The port played an important part in the development of Oamaru and, consequently, hotels, banks and offices developed alongside the grain and wool warehouses.
The commercial district developed further along Thames Street with the widening of the Thames Street bridge over the Oamaru creek.
The Ports closure during the 1970s has helped, one thinks, in that it has allowed the town to be preserved for appreciation in it's current format.
