The Craic Irish Tavern
Review date: 10th November 2007
In keeping with a weird recently established tradition amongst towns of note, Dunedin has it's own Irish Pub - in this case it's called The Craic. And it's right in the centre of town at The Octagon.
Right enough, the usual suspects of Guiness and Kilkenny were on offer but - as we had a decent tour ahead of us - we did not partake on this occasion.
We did, however, indulge ourselves in the food offerings of the establishment had for lunch which were found to be more than satisfactory.
I settled for the Mt Cook Salmon which had been soaked in Manuka honey and Irish Whiskey before being smoked on the premises. M'learned colleague elected for the penne in a creamy sauce of mushrooms and ham. The salmon came with fries, which is normally a serious no-no, and both dishes with very fresh and delicious white bread. The smoked salmon was excellent. Nicely done and flavoursome. Even the chips were nice. Normally the chips you get in these Irish pub things are nothing short of over-salted sh1t - but these weren't just edible but were actually rather nice.
If they keep their beer nearly as good as they do their food, next time I'm in Dunedin I'll not only eat at The Craic but I'll have a beer too.
And the service, as seems to be customary in New Zealand, was just fantastic too. Quick, efficient and cheerful.
The Craic has restored my confidence in what, certainly in Europe, has become and old, tired and tatty format. And that's a major compliment from a grumpy old man.
