Occidental Belgian Cafe Bar
Review date: 28 October 2006
Right off the central shopping area of Queen Street, the Occidental Belgian Cafe Bar is well located and, apparently, popular with the locals.
The Occidental offers a selection of Belgian beers, including Leffe (Blonde and Bruine on tap and bottled Radieuse), Hoegaarden and Westmalle (double and triple in bottles) all served in the relevant and correct glasses.
Food in the Belgian style is also on offer. Both the Vol-Au-Vent and the Belgian Sauasages and mash are good - but the Vol-Au-Vent is recommended by this site. The Vol-Au-Vent is large and utterly stuffed with chicken and mushrooms - a very tasty and filling meal.
The service was well above what one expects from a pub and better than what we have received in most of New Zealand to date. The excellent selection of beer, good food and brilliant service all ensured that the customers flocked to the Occidental resulting in a vibrant atmosphere.
Apparently, bands play the Occidental two nights every weekend.
Very highly recommended.
