Hawkes Bay - some great things to do

By Mark Sukhija

  • Napier - The City of Napier is well worth a visit purely for the architecture. Destroyed by an earthquake and fire in 1931, the town was rebuilt in two years in the architecural styles of the time - the Art Deco, stripped Classical and the Spanish Mission. Marine Parade (pictured left) is a beautifully kept parade dotted with the occasional night-lit fountain and some fine eateries.

  • Vineyards - The Hawkes Bay region is well-reputed for its wines and is home to New Zealands oldest winery - Mission Estate Winery. Don't overlook a visit to boutique winery Moana Park -maker of New Zealand's only Tawny-style wine and many of whose wines are only available at the cellar door.

  • Gannet Colony at Cape Kidnappers - The largest mainland gannet colony in the world is dramatically set against a backdrop of sheer cliff faces which sweep around the massive Hawke Bay. Peaking at 20,000 birds during the height of the breeding season, the lack of predators and the Gannets tolerance of a human presence contributed to the success of this 13-hectare DOC reserve.
