For the purpose of the 2012 eclipse, Cairns gets you right there - so if you're arriving or departing around the eclipse dates is probably the most handy. Otherwise, connecting to international flights through Brisbane / Sydney / Melbourne with a domestic flight on Qantas is probably the next best alternative if times are tight.
