Gothic architecture

These are some notes I've put together on Gothic Architecture.

Gothic architecture

  • flourished during the medieval period
  • was preceded by Romanesque architecture
  • was succeded by Renaissance architecture
  • originated in France during the 12th Century and lasted until the 16th Century
  • was previously known as Opus Francigenum (the "French-style")
  • was refered to as Gothic during the latter part of the Renaissance as stylistic insult

Characteristic features include:

  • pointed arches
  • ribbed vaulting
  • flying buttresses
