Zürich
While Zürich is not the Swiss capital,
it is Switzerlands largest city and economic centre. Although
Zürich is probably better known as a banking and financial
centre, Zürich does offer possibilities for the visitor
to Switzerland. Zürich is home to several museums including
the Swiss
National Museum (Landesmuseum) which provides an excellent
exhibition on Swiss history and culture and the Kunsthaus which
has an excellent collection of 19th and 20th century art and
regular special exhibitions.
What to see in Zürich
Zürich has numerous oppurtunities for the traveller/tourist. The main attractions in Zürich include the Romanesque Grossmünster, St Peters Church and Fraumünster.
Where to eat and drink in Zürich
Zürich offers numerous oppurtunities for having a drink or dining out. Restaurants, pubs and bars are concentrated around the Niederdorf, the diminutive but lively Kreis 5 and the up and coming Zürich West which has been revitalised in recent years.
Where to stay in Zürich
Zürich hotels tend to be more expensive than most other places in Switzerland. If you want to visit Zürich for more than a few days, you might be better off staying in close by Rapperswil or Winterthur - both of which are well connected to Zürich by train and by boat in the summer.
Getting around Zürich
Getting around Zürich is fairly straightforward. Most of major attractions are withing walking distance of the main train station. The Zücher Verkhersverbund also runs the extensive bus and tram network through the city. Both the bus and trams are usually frequent and almost invariably punctual.
