Bierhalle Kropf

Review date: 05 October 2007

Cieling of the Bierhalle Kropf, Zurich, SwitzerlandGenerally, Swiss beer halls are different from their more famous counterparts in Münich and Bavaria in that they place much greater emphasis on dining and the Bierhalle Kropf is no exception.

Well known in Zürich for its fine food and resplendid ceilings (pictured), the Kropf was justifiably packed this evening - with all tables under the decorated ceilings reserved by the (one assumes) the bankers who are native to this part of Zürich.

The Kropf offers seasonal dishes in addition it's standard menu card and, appropriately to this time of year, on this visit a menu of game dishes was on offer.

On this visit, partaking of the Game menu, I indulged my palatte in a sumptuous serving of Red Deer with Spatzli, Red Cabbage with roasted chestnuts, Spätzli and some cranberry sauce strategically placed atop the flat part of a decapitated pear. M'learned companion inludged herself of Venison with Spatzli and another decapitated pear with some cranberry sauce sitting atop like, well, that!

The Red Deer was excellent - tender and textured at the same time. Sauce was splendid and an excellent compliment to both the meat and the Spätzli. The venison was also good - although the quality of the pieces could have been improved as parts were, perhaps, overly chewy but this, I believe, is to be overly picky as the meal was good and well presented. In both meals, the cabbage and chestnuts were excellent and the spätzli solid.

Service was extremely polite, welcoming, attentive and hospitable. I do appreciate a person in the hospitality industry who realises that a please and a thank-you doesn't go a-miss in terms of service. Our waitress did not disappoint. Please and thank-yous were in abudance. Nay, in spades. Splash this in with with a dose of due but not over-bearing attentiveness, an occasional smile and you have hospitality.

The Kropf is, in my not-so-humble-opinion, an excellent place to experience a seasonal dish done in the Swiss-style and let your hair down Swiss-style. There's always an excellent ambience at the Kropf. The seasonal menu, certainly on this performance, is worth the trip.

Recommended. Absolutely.
