Paddy Reilly's, Zürich
Review date: 25 June 2006
Following the closure of the Noble Dubliner amidst much rumour, innuendo and allegations of unlawfulness, the established and reputable Paddy Reillys emerged to turn the declining property around.
Having visited Paddy's brother pub in Basel, I was aware of what the chain was capable of.
Cosmetic changes to the interior have made Paddy's much brighter (and cleaner) than it's predecessor and identifiably have left large pieces of the Dub decor in place. Capacity seems has increased and the dart board has gone. The usual selection of English and Irish beers (Guiness, Kilkenny etc) are on offer.
The toilets haven't changed either - which is a shame as they were notoriusly unreliably under previous management. No ferryman here, though!
The Full Irish Breakfast, frankly, wasn't. Either full or Irish, you understand. Nearly all the ingrediants were wrong. The toast, fried egg and tomato were correct. (How far wrong can you go with those?) The beans were of the sort one uses in chili, not the sort for a breakfast. And they came in a salad bowl - not on the plate where they belong. There potatoes where chips. Wrong - these should be fried potatoes or hash browns at worst. The sausages were bangers - usually Irish sausages are more substantial than their english counterparts. And at no point was there any mention of either HP Sauce (for an English Breakfast) or Daddys Sauce (for an Irish breakfast.) The bacon was streaky bacon. It should be a rind of bacon. And all these errors come for 20 francs a pop.
And the service really was pitifully slow. My tip for service? Prompter next time please. And a smile doesn't hurt.
While I gripe, this is an improvement on the Dub which was in dire need of a refurbishment. This has certainly been successful. The poor service I ascribe to "teething problems" with staff who may or may not have worked at a bar before. Kitchen, on the other hand, needs to have a good hard look at itself. If the ingredients of it's other dishes are as wide of the mark as they were for this dish - I will not be eating at Paddys in Zurich.
Apparently, there are DJ's on Fridays and Saturdays but I've not been at Paddys for those yet.
Still, as a new opener they deserve another chance. That other chance will be reported here, of course!
