The following is some of the information we received from on-line sources while we were looking at what we should do during our Lisbon trip which we planned only one week previously having never been to Lisbon before.

Plan date: 07 December 2007

Later this month (December 2007) we will be visiting Lisbon for the first time. We will be staying at the Hotel Tivoli Lisboa which, we understand, is centrally located in Lisbon.

With a limited time-span we will only scratch the surface of the city and are treating this very much as a reconnaissance of the city.

We would like to vist the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos in Belém - which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

We have only just booked this trip and, therefore, in the very early stages of planning.

Update: 09 December 2007

We have received information that we should not miss:

• the Alfama and the São Jorge Castle - which, apparently, has spectacular views of the city
• Belém Tower, a 16th Centruy tower, and
• the Jerónimos Monastery
• a try of the "pasteis de belém" which is, I am reliably informed, the most typical cake off Lisbon
• The Parque das Nações of Expo'98 fame

It has also been suggested today to take the train to Queluz and walk for around 15-20 minutes to the Palace and then continue on the train to Sintra for the two palaces and several museums.

Today it was suggested that we do a wine tasting at the Instituto do Vinho do Porto in the Bairro Alto area of Portugal, opposite the Gloria Funicular. In an old mansion run by the Port Wine Institute you can sample Ports from their enormous cellars. My messanger also recommended a walking tour by Lisbon Walkers.
