Turin and Milan travel plan 2008

[ To Milan ] [ Milan ] [ Turin ] [ La Venaria Reale ] [ Leaving Turin for Zürich ] [ The Plan ]

We are currently planning to visit Milan and Turin in Northern Italy over the Easter weekend. We intend to visit an exhibition about the Savoys at La Veneria Reale.

How we are planning to do this

On the Thursday evening, we are planning to leave Zürich for Milan on the Cisalpino train. We will spend a day looking around Milan and possibly visit the Canova exhibition at the Palazzo Reale. In the later afternoon/early evening of Friday we will jump on the train again to Turin. On Saturday we will visit an exhibition about the Savoys at La Veneria Reale. Sunday as yet remains unplanned. On the Monday we will make our return trip (on the trains again) to Zürich. It's possible we'll stop of in Milan again en route but this remains an open point right now. We have received some useful information from other travellers which we have outlined below. What ever happens will be reported on this site.

More information came through for our Turin trip today.

Today, it was recommended that we visit the Palazzo Madama.

According to my source, it's necessary to sign up for a guide at La Veneria Reale. I don't recall seeing this on their website but will check again. The audio guides at La Veneria Reale have come recommended as being informative.

Once again the Egyptian Museum and the National Museum of Cinema were both recommended.

Having been told that the Mole Antonellia (the building which houses The National Museum of Cinema) is interesting I took a look at their website and found a small diagram of the shape of the building which does indeed look interesting. Apparently, you can take the elevator to the top of the building for views over the city. The viewing areas are, apparently, themed into such categories as "Wild West" and "Romance." In one, however, you can sit toilets to view various clips.

In the same building as the Egyptian Museum is the Galleria Sabauda which is home to many paintings.

Churchwise San Lorenzo, the former royal chapel, and the Duomo have both been recommended. The Duomo is home to the famed Turin Shroud.

Food and drink wise, it's been suggested that we try the local hot chocolate - which given the time of year we're visiting stands a good chance of been acted upon. A cafe called Bicerin has also been recommended for it's "speciality" drink made from espresso, chocolate and cream. The Bicerin is near the Madonna of Consolation church. It has also been suggested that we partake of various snacks in the Turin cafes and bars during the evening aperitif.

Today we received information that the Egyptian Museum and the National Museum of Cinema are both worth visiting.

Apparently, it was close to Turin that the Slow Food Movement was founded. I'll be looking more into this over the next day or two.
