Hotel Portinari, Bruges
Review date: 17 September 2006
We recently stayed in the Hotel Portinari in Bruges. While excellent located, close to the old town square, the Cathedral and all the major sites of Bruges, the hotel Portinari was very, very average. Reception staff when we arrived seemed to be just about interested enough to give us a map and very little effort to do anything else for us.
Our room, which was described as a double "with Queen bed" - which would imply a slightly larger room and, therefore, justify the slightly higher price, was what just a little to big to be cramped yet too small to be small. They just put a slightly larger bed in a standard room, me thinks.
The bathroom was definately small, with only enough room for one person at a time (unless one person was in the shower and the other out but then you have the "can I get out of the shower now?" problem.) And the towels really do need to be replaced with something of better quality - it was just impossible to get dry!
OK, so I moan and whinge, but the hotel was basically clean. And centrally located. There's plenty of places to eat around the hotel, most of which seem to close when the last customers leave at between 22:00 and 23:00. It's also walking distance from most of the sites and around 10 minutes walk from the train station. Which means, at the prices they charged us, the only real reason you would want to stay here is for the location. That's it. Otherwise, welcome to tourist Brugges.
