Syrtaki, Zug

Review date: 27 July 2006

I've not been to Syrtaki for around two years, but used to come here quite regularly as it used to be a quality restaurant close to the Lake.

The large portion of assorted snacks was good, but not excellent. The stuffed wine leaves, prawns and taramasalta and pitta bread was enough for four of us. The main courses, however, were disappointing. The Moussaka seems to have been frozen for some days (it might well even have been supermarket variety!) and tasted, generally, of nothing except frozen something. The duck in plum wine sauce was of variable quality. The meat on Marks plate was fine, however that on his companions was grizzly in the extreme was took more effort than it was worth to cut. The plum wine sauce tasted of nothing. Not even plum. To top it off, it was lumpy enough to have come out of a packet. Out of four dishes, not one was especially enjoyable.

The Rotouda open wine was nice, though, quite full and flavoursome. But we didn't come here for the wine. We came for the food. But at least the got something right.

The service was pleasant, if unremarkable and somewhat inefficient.

Overall, this was a disappointing visit to what used to be very good restaurant made better by the lake view. Not worth the trip from Zürich any more. Probably not worth it any more even if I did live in Zug.
