Today
we headed out to Bremgarten, close to Zürich in
Canton Aargau, for the Easter Market - which is held annually
on Easter Monday.
Arriving early afternoon, we took lunch close to the River
Reuss not far from the wooden bridge, Reussbrücke, which
spans the river more famous for running through the picturesque
Lucerne.
The Old Town was packed with a full assortment of stalls selling
all manner of things - from modern wholesale garments (which
sadly predominated) to a selection of stall holders with Alpine
cheeses, dried and cured meats from Graubunden and assorted
organic foods. Of course, we sampled some of the foodstuffs
- most especially the meats from the Buendner
Alphuesli who offered an excellent selection of sausages
and cured meats as well as cheeses and other specialities from
Canton Graubünden. We picked up a stash of beef which
had been cured and smoked. Actually, it was shockingly tasty
and well worth the money.
At
another stall we found an offering of organic foods - so we
bought a cake. The cake was made without any fat, sugar or
artificial presevatives and, if I understood the sign correctly,
any flour. Which was interesting. The fruit cake was topped
with nuts. Although it was much drier than most fruit cakes
- it was also a lot tastier with an most enjoyable hint of
spices therein.
Being a Swiss market, there was also a selection of fairground
rides - including the obligatory dodgem cars and fast moving
rides, which were more than welcome.
The market, convivial and friendly, straddled both sides
of the river and the complete old town as is clearly popular
with the natives of the region - and it's quite clear why.
